How to analyze advertisements ?

Name: Marco Flores                                                                                          Date: 1/30/12 Advertisement: Nike ; Will To Win.
Layout
Describe the layout of the advertisement. How is content arranged? For example, are elements arranged symmetrically or asymmetrically?
The layout of this advertisement is mostly showing the basketball player Lebron James playing basketball in a  stadium, but in this ad of Nike it shows how the sport basketball can be amazing in the country. Plus there is also the logo of Nike and it's ad quote " Will To Win "., not only that but in the left of the basketball player it shows some powerful sentences that are " YOU WILL NOTICE.YOU WILL SCREAM. BECAUSE YOU WANT IT TO HAPPEN. " And that mostly means that when something thing is going to happen you will see it and you would be happy that happen. As well I think that this ad is mostly a arranged symmetrically ad because it shows what they are trying to tell you. Or like what is the idea of this Ad that wants you to understand. Finally, it was like the Nike's logo that means that this ad came from the company of Nike.
Describe the relationship between the written (copy) and graphic elements of the advertisement.
In this advertisement the relationship between the written (copy) and the graphic elements are mostly the same but also different a little bit. Well in the written part of the advertisement of Nike, it has like two quotes or ad sentence that want the company Nike to be know like that. The one that is in big letters it the one that is next to the logo of Nike and says " Will To Win ", that's how Mike wants to get known everywhere. Plus, it has another sentences all the way to the left, but letters are small and they are like three sentences all together. That mostly talks about how the graphic elements shows that three sentences in the advertisement all the way to the left. In the other hand, in the graphic elements I think its a good picture of the advertisement. Because it shows Lebron James jumping so high and about to short and that he is playing basketball but also it shows the whole basketball can be amazing in the country. Or how the sentence " Will To Win " can be a connection to the picture, like if you use Nike you can win.
How does the advertisement use page space? Is the advertisement full of text and graphics or does it have a lot of white space?

I think the advertisement is using page space maybe by making the picture big so people can see it. And they  in this picture it shows the advertisement big in the website. And the advertisement is full of both text and graphics. Because in the background is red and a picture of Lebron James in a basketball stadium with a lot of people watching the game and the picture is in the middle, plus it has text around it. Not only, that but there is a little information in the under the picture of  Lebron James in different color and they are not big and not that small.
How does the advertisement use alignment to organize its information?
The advertisement use alignment to organize its information by lining the text around the picture and not to far from the picture so the people can see the text next to it like they are in the top, bottoms and sides.
Colors and Graphics
Describe the colors used on the advertisement. Do they work well together? Is there a high contrast ratio between text and background?
The colors that are used in the advertisement are mostly white and black around the picture. But, most white so the people can see it and it wouldn't be that dark in the text.Plus, it has a little black in the bottom to reflect the color red so the text can been seen. And Yes, they work well together with the color of the texts and the color of the background. There is a little high contrast ratio between the text and background, because the background is mostly a black color, so the text has to be the opposite of black so it can been seen what the advertisement try's to tell you.
Does the color scheme add to the purpose or tone of the advertisement? What tone or message do these colors convey?
Yes, the color scheme adds to the purpose of the tone of the advertisement. Because mostly the advertisement has the tone of light not dark. What I mean that the quote of Mike " Will To Win " is something possible not negative. The message or the tone of these colors convey that the advertisement is good and you show watch it more or learn more about it.
Is a photograph used in the advertisement? If so, what kind of shot is it? What angle is it taken from? What is the lighting like? How is color used?
Yes, a photograph of the famous basketball player Lebron James is used in the advertisement. The shot shows Lebron James jumping high and is trying to score in a basketball game. The picture is taken from a high point of view. The lighting is like normal color like you can see the colors of the basketball, the color skin of Lebron James, and the fans also.
If people or animals are in the advertisement, how would you describe them? What are they doing?
Well in this advertisement there is a famous basketball player Lebron James and I would describe him as a good example in this advertisement. Well, because it it shows him about to score in a basketball game and like the quote of Mike has something to do with win and that can be a good example.
What is the background of this advertisement? That is, where does it “take place”?
The background of this advertisement that am doing is only the color red but, on top of that there is a picture of Lebron James with a little of black background. Also in the other hand, it takes place in a basketball stadium.
What “story” do you think this advertisement is trying to tell?
I don't think this advertisement is trying to tell a story, I think its trying to tell why we should see this advertisement and what we should do.
Typography
Describe the font(s) used for each element of the advertisement. How does the advertisement use typography to distinguish among different elements (create hierarchy or emphasize a message)?
I think the front that is used in this element of this advertisement is like Bold and in the text of the bottom can be Arial. Well in this advertisement the typography doesn't really have like art, it only looks like a picture and some text on it. And with the picture it emphasize the message of Mike or why is basketball amazing in the world like the information says in the bottom of the advertisement.
Describe the font families used (name them if you can). What messages do these font families convey?
I don't know the front families that are used in this advertisement, and I don't know the message of these front families convey.
Can you see what kind of typographical formatting has been applied (tracking, kerning, leading, and so on)? What impact do these formatting elements have on the advertisement?
Well I would say that the type of typographical formatting that is applied to the advertisement is leading in the few sentences in the left of the picture. And also its the same thing in the bottom of the picture with different color. The impact that the type of typographical elements have is that they can be easy to read, like you can understand it.
Tone
How would you describe the overall feeling of this ad? What word would you use to describe it? For example, is it playful? Serious? Urgent? Hip? Glamorous? Friendly? Patriotic?
I would describe the overall feeling of this advertisement is that I think it needs a little be more of information like it can be on the text or graphic side.A word that I would describe it would be " Playful ", because Nike can is mostly a company of clothes and shoes. Plus you can use those clothes and shoes to play some sport or go to the gym or something else.
Who is this advertisement aimed at? What message does the design convey about the audience and the client that commissioned it? About the product or service?
This advertisement can aimed at people that like basketball or at the company that they make clothes also shoes to use. I think the message that the design convey the audience and the client that commissioned can be that basketball is a wonderful sport or with Mike you can win.
How does the graphic design (balance, emphasis, color, tone, and so on) communicate the content?
The graphic design communicate the content in some ways because there are some good color, but the I think it needs a little bit more of balance or emphasis as well.
